Detailed Description

A machine word that is the wrapping ring ℤ/2^w: an unsigned built-in integer (not bool) that the category registrations certify as a commutative ring under + and *, periodic under +, and totally ordered.

The machine-type part guarantees the operations the carriers use (/, %, the overflow builtins, numeric_limits); the category part is the semantic claim. Signed int fails both (its ring claim is refused: overflow is UB).
